Taking off late after an appointment was to cost me------- a course guy from Dorset at the launch point was delighted to hear I was going to his homeland, and so was I till half way back and ran into a wall of snow!!
Had a great ride down to Weymouth with three appearances of 10knot on the averager - not bad for the UK.
Coming north all was well till near the Park where I could see the snow was right across the horizon ahead. Quickly shifting from x/c to survival mode I thought about diverting to Lasham but visitors coming tonight might get the impression I was avoiding them so I called the Park to make arrangements to land there if I couldn't get through the snow - thanks whoever that was.
Carried on and as I reached the snow I put on the horizon and the engine to check both - all fine. Also happy to see it was so cold the snow didn't build on the wings but blew off, and in fact there was still some lift about.
With 19:1 glide in to Aston Down I weaved fast through the thinnest snow and finally was rewarded with a clear gap to land uneventfully at home.
The channel coast was a magnificent sight at Weymouth and I had great fun streeting. With an overall L/D ratio of 76:1 that's real motorway flying!!
Very cold according to the OAT gauge but a ski suit kept me warm and I had a superb day out - but hat's off to the early birds who made so much better use of it.
